Bagdad Theater & Pub
One ofthe grandest of Portland's grand old theaters, this lavish 1927 movie palace has hosted some 25,000 shows over the years, including Sammy Davis, Jr. and a talking horse. The "Mediterra-neon" masterpiece is still an anchor of the Hawthorne commercial district, and now shows first-run films after a full restoration in 2013 that included the installation of a 20,000-watt surround-sound system, a digital projector, and new rocker seats. (There are still occasional readings and other live events.) You can see a movie or show, enjoy a meal and a craft-brewed beer at the restaurant, or tilt a glass and shoot some pool at one of two bars, including a seven-story-high one behind the screen.
