Passersby often wander into the lobby of this hotel tucked away in a Ribeira backstreet thinking it's an upscale, exotic antique shop. As the name suggests (Descobertas means "discoveries) takes its inspiration from destinations reached by Portuguese explorers which means rooms may be decorated with Indian silk slippers, African fabrics, Chinese ceramics, cushions sown from tea or coffee sacks. Each floor is dedicated to a particular country from Cape Verde to Macau. The building once housed a trade association and you’ll see that early 20th-century industrial heritage in the massive stone walls, iron pillars, and exposed wood beams. Guests with a sweet tooth will love breakfast.
