Cedar Dunes Provincial Park Campground
The most dramatic location on PEI’s southwestern coast is the setting for this excellent campground. (The island’s iconic black-and-white-striped West Point Lighthouse and museum is on these grounds, and the dunes are as big and beautiful as the sunsets.) The beach here is very wide, providing endless room for sandcastle construction. And the view of the opposite shore in New Brunswick is as close as it gets, other than at the Confederation Bridge; West Point is known as the place where Mi’kmaq once landed on a regular basis as they crossed the Northumberland Strait in their large, seagoing canoes. The swimming in these relatively warm waters is supervised in summer, and there’s a nice nature trail through a wooded area. Campsites are in open areas with small groves of trees, and the services can be counted on as they can in all PEI provincial campgrounds: clean showers and changing rooms, a kitchen shelter for preparing meals in poor weather, and areas for games like volleyball. Book early to get a treed site if you’re in a tent. Watch out for poison ivy.
