While no beaches exist in the port area, a 5- to 10-minute drive or cab ride to the outskirts of town will bring you to numerous beaches, some of which are better than others. The municipal beach, Playa Coca Cola, was named after a Coca Cola depot that once sat there. On weekends, this is where you will find the most vibrant beach crowds, as well as seafood shacks selling cheap meals. The beach is mediocre at best, though, and during weekdays, it is empty; however, a few new hotels and restaurants have managed to set up shop. If you can't handle the vicious sand flies and the heavy accumulation of driftwood and other debris that wash up on shore, head to Playas El Faro and Cieneguita, to the south of town, which are significantly cleaner and home to the area's best hotels.
