The Riviera Maya meets Las Vegas in Cirque du Soleil's UFO-like 600-seat theater, which opened in November 2014 beside the lavish 750-room Grand Mayan Resort not far from Puerto Morelos. In true Cirque style, the show, called Joya, features swirling music based on Latin rhythms and performers in flowing butterfly costumes creating surrealistic, mesmerizing scenes. There is a story line about the journey of an alchemist and his granddaughter as they search for the meaning of life. But you needn’t follow the plot to get caught up in the troupe’s dazzling acrobatics. Tickets are available for the show alone, with the least expensive seats consisting of high stools ringing the back of the theater; the $80 seats are more comfortable. Packages include a combination ticket for the show, dinner and Champagne.
