If the countercultural party scene in Puerto Viejo has a headquarters, it’s Rocking J’s, kinda like an artsily done-up summer camp for recent college grads or a hippy commune–cum–beach resort for the backpacker set. Lodging options range from an open-air thatched-roof communal hammock area to a second-floor camping platform where you can pop up your own tent or rent one of theirs. With each of these options you get a small locker area to store your gear. There are also private rooms, but the fun here is the communal living—bonfire parties on the beach out back; whipping up grub in the kitchen; downing pretty good (and cheap) burritos in the restaurant; playing Ping-Pong in the rec room. Fun!
