Few foreign travelers make it to Punta Arenas in winter, but if you do, there is a ski resort that operates from mid-June to mid-September: the Centro de Esquí Cerro Mirador, situated at the border of the Reserva Nacional Magallanes. It's notable more than anything else for its view of the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, the Darwin Range of the Andes, and -- on a clear day -- Dawson Island. During the summer, they often run their only chairlift to carry you to the top of the peak, or you can hike the hill yourself. You can also take the chair up in winter to enjoy the view. The resort has 10 runs, ski rental, and a cafeteria. Ski lift tickets cost about $26 (£17); a ski rental package is $16 (£14). The resort (tel. 61/241479) is just above town; to get here, take a taxi.
