Formerly called Machaca, then Belcampo, the new and improved Copal Tree Lodge is set in the midst of a pristine 12,000 acre nature reserve and offers stellar personalized service, high design cabins, excellent cuisine, and a raft of adventures. It is the most luxurious option in the Toledo area and one of the top hotels in the country. Guests often spend their entire stay just exploring the grounds here, which allows for scintillating birding, visits to the Lodge’s organic farm, cacao groves, a sugar cane plantation, and its chocolate and rum making facilities, and challenging fishing. Fly-fishing for world-class permit is the principal game, although tarpon, bonefish, and snook can also be tackled. A tramway connects the lodge to the river below, where there’s a lovely dock and bar area. The 12 large individual bungalows, jungle suites, and family villa are set on a high hillside of rich forest above the Río Grande. Each features a huge shower made of smooth river stone, and has two showerheads (some rooms also have a bathtub on the porch for jungle bathing). Screened in porches for enjoying the views without bugs are another welcome feature, as are the high ceilinged rooms, sleek contemporary decor and tremendously plush beds. The kidney-shaped pool has a broad and inviting stone deck area around it, and it’s also set on one of the highest points on the property, giving it excellent views all around. A renowned chef comes in for a week per month from California to set the menus, based on what’s freshest at the on-site organic farm (the food is superb).
