Not many world capitals have good salmon fishing within city limits. The season for Reykjavík's Elliðaár River extends from June 1 to August 31, and opens with the mayor throwing the first cast. Contact the Angling Club of Reykjavík (tel. 568-6050; www.svfr.is) for information on permits and procedures. Also ask about trout and arctic char fishing in nearby lakes. For tackle and equipment, try Veiðihornið, Hafnarstræti 5 (tel. 551-6760), or Útivist og Veiði, Síðmúli 11 (tel. 588-6500).
For sea angling, Hvalalíf has a 3-hour evening tour that leaves at 8pm, April through October, and culminates with their chef serving up your catch at their Lobstership Restaurant. Tickets for the trip are 7,000kr ($112/£56). Whale Watching Reykjavík (tel. 533-2660; www.whalewatching.is) has a 3-hour sea-angling tour for 5,900kr ($94/£47) from June to August, leaving daily at 11am, with grills on-board.
