The Old Churchyard (Suðurgata or Hólavallagarður Cemetery)

One block west of the pond, in a leafy area between Ljosvallagata and Suðurgata, this cemetery was consecrated in 1838 and is the burial ground for several of the city’s luminaries. Jón Sigurðsson, the most important leader of Iceland’s independence movement, is found here: Walk from the main entrance on Ljosvallagata straight down the center, past the old chapel bell, and it’s the beige obelisk on the left, a few plots before you reach the outer wall. Its lack of ostentation speaks volumes about Iceland’s egalitarian ideals.
