The high-molded ceilings and grand marble central staircase of the posh, historic 1919 building (originally the headquarters of Eimskip, Iceland’s first major shipping line) still remain in this slick downtown hotel. A favorite among business travelers, the hotel adds to its historic base with a modern Scandinavian design that eschews refinement in the avant-garde art installations that grace its lobby, the glitzy 1919 Restaurant (main courses 3,500kr–4,500kr), and a lounge filled with cube stools covered in cowhide and floor-to-ceiling windows. The minimalist rooms are more subdued but are big and airy, with hardwood floors and dark fabrics. The upper-floor suites add even more space, plus skylights and private Jacuzzis in some.
