In September 2017, Hurricane Irma caused extensive damage across the island. Many places closed for rebuilding. Frommer's recommends that vacationers check in advance with all businesses before traveling.
There are few dining spots on the island as close to the sand as this one, and hip Tamboo takes full advantage of its unique location on a popular surfing beach with an expansive two-level deck set amidst the sand dunes and palm trees. It’s a prime spot for both surfers and beach goers, and a great location for whale watching (not to mention people-watching). You can find just about everything on the menu, but those in the know stick to fresh seafood liked grilled Caribbean lobster and mahi mahi in caper sauce. Stand out starters include crispy calamari in a coconut chile sauce and plantain-crusted shrimp with chipotle-lime aioli. There are also inexpensive wraps, sandwiches, and salads. The friendly and professional owners also run the attached inn, Beside the Pointe (www.besidethepointe.com/lodging.html), which offers clean, modern rooms within steps of all the surfing, beach, and bar action.
