This well-organized museum guides its visitors in chronological order through the history of Brazil, from its original inhabitants, through the colonial era, slavery, and dictatorships to the modern world, displaying almost anything and everything from Imperial paintings and indigenous artifacts to coins, carriages, and the throne of Dom Pedro II. Almost all the item descriptions are translated into English and audio tours are also available. The building itself is an interesting example of colonial architecture in downtown Rio.
