After a long renovation, this magnificent theater at Cinelândia in downtown Rio reopened in 2010. Inspired by the Paris Opéra, the Theatro has golden statues on the roof, stained glass, mosaics, neoclassical columns, and elegant balconies. It is home to its own symphony orchestra and ballet company performing both international as well as Brazilian works. The venue also hosts many other Brazilian and international performing arts companies, with a calendar of events that extends throughout the year. Check the theater website for up-to-date programming or see local newspapers for ticket prices and listings of programs. The Sunday morning performances are often only R$1.  Guided tours in English are organized daily (Tue-Fri noon, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm; Sat 11am, noon and 1pm). Places are limited so make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before the tour.
