Pacific Beaches Outside Rivas
Farther north of San Juan del Sur and accessed by the road west from Rivas is a long stretch of beaches increasingly famous among surfers. Though much of the coastal road is a dirt track, it is steadily improving, and new hotels and developments are making the area less secluded than it used to be. Playa Gigante is the most popular beach with regular weekenders from Rivas an hour away. There are some casual surf camps along the crescent-shaped shoreline, and it gets especially crowded during holidays. Take the Las Salinas bus from Rivas and get off at El Tambor. From there, the beach is a 3km (1 3/4-mile) walk. Playa Popoyo is renowned amongst surfers as having the perfect wave and is considered by many to be the ultimate surf experience in Nicaragua. It can be accessed from a dirt track at Limon or down a paved road from the fishing town of Las Salinas de Nagualapa, via the huge, expansive Playa Guasacate. Buses leave from Rivas or directly from Managua for El Astillero via Ochomogo.
