After taking over in 2021, innkeepers Raleigh and Eric Churchhill spent a year redesigning the rooms at this historic guesthouse, built in 1835 by the prominent ship captain for whom it’s named. Rooms that once had a country-inn style are now clean and mod, with cool vintage furniture and fixtures, luxe linens and splashy contemporary art on the walls. Common spaces, including a parlor and a cozy library filled with fascinating Maine history, are just as stylish. The garden courtyard is a terrific asset, a Zen little space surrounded by greenery, even as the inn is just steps off busy Main Street—you couldn’t be better located for quick access to downtown’s shops, cafes, museums, and galleries.
