If you need an excuse to detour down the charming St. George peninsula, can I suggest a picnic with a to-go order from this “modern luncheonette,” 20 minutes south of Rockland? From the small kitchen of a converted farmhouse (cool old tin ceilings in the dining area), owner Malcom Bedell and his staff churn out nostalgic comfort foods with highbrow twists: grilled cheese with Havarti and truffle oil, hand-battered fish stick sandwiches, a luscious white-cheddar mac-and-cheese. But the real prize is a sandwich on Chicken Sando Sunday, a changing weekly lineup of perfectly crispy, fast-food-style fried-chicken sandwiches (I’m partial to the one with house-made horseradish pimento cheese). They do a limited number, so you have to call ahead to order.
