Monte

Set in a romantic garden close to Rovinj’s hilltop church, dinner at upmarket Monte is a multisensory experience, stimulating sight, taste, and scent. The menu features exquisitely presented nouvelle cuisine, with an emphasis on Istrian produce and Adriatic seafood. Owner-chef Danijel Dado Dekić experiments with unusual combinations of flavors and textures, so while your waiter or waitress will explain each dish to you in detail, it’s still challenging to try to identify the different elements. You might begin with octopus and artichoke with lentil salad, followed by monkfish served with squid croquettes and a purée of Swiss chard and scallops. The presentation of the food is likewise surprising and sophisticated. There’s an excellent sommelier, and the setting is divine, in a walled garden draped with bougainvillea on a terrace shaded by awnings and lit by chandeliers. To try a selection of dishes, opt for the seven-course degustation menu, with optional wine pairings. There are also vegetarian options and (surprisingly) a children’s menu. Reservations are recommended.
