Visitor Information

Salt Cay has its own very informative website (www.saltcay.org), which has a business directory -- with listings of accommodations, restaurants, grocery stores, watersports operators, golf-cart rentals, and the like -- a map of the island, history, and much more.

Salt Cay has a handful of grocery/convenience stores, among them Nettie's Store and Pat's Store. Nettie Talbot, born and bred on Salt Cay, sells fresh-baked bread out of her store.

Getting There

The notoriously tiny airstrip at the Salt Cay airport has been lengthened and resurfaced -- but you still need to arrive during daylight hours; the airstrip is not lighted for night. Air Turks & Caicos (tel. 649/946-4999 or 649/946-6940 or -6906 on Salt Cay; www.airturksandcaicos.com) and fly to Salt Cay from Providenciales. Or you can charter a flight with Global Airways (tel. 649/231-0045; www.globalairways.tc) or Caicos Express (tel. 649/244-1407; caicosexpressairways@tciway.tc); flights run from $500 to $650 a charter.

Air Turks & Caicos offers daily flights between Provo and Salt Cay; the flight takes 30 minutes and costs $160. Contact Global for schedules and fees.

A government-subsidized ferry runs between Grand Turk and Salt Cay, weather permitting, every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday (leaving from South Dock -- the island's only dock, by the way). The trip takes an hour and costs $12. You can also hire a private boat operator to take you between Salt Cay and Grand Turk (as long as the seas aren't too rough). Contact Salt Cay Adventure Tours (tel. 649/946-6909; www.saltcaytours.com). Cruise-ship passengers who arrive in Grand Turk can also contact Salt Cay Adventure Tours to arrange day trips to Salt Cay.

Getting Around

No one needs a car to get around Salt Cay, which has more donkeys than cars; it's the perfect place for getting around on foot, by bike, or by golf cart. Contact Salt Cay Riders Golf Cart Rentals (tel. 649/244-1407; two-seater golf carts $65/day, $350/week; credit cards accepted).
