Salt Lake City restaurants are more casual than those in most major American cities. The service is generally excellent and very friendly. Alcoholic drinks are not offered when diners are seated, so except in private clubs, you'll have to ask for a drink.

Inexpensive

In addition to the choices reviewed, I'm quite fond of the garlic burgers at the low-key watering hole known as the Cotton Bottom, 2820 E. 6200 South (tel. 801/273-9830), the Neapolitan-style pizzas at Settebello, 260 S. 200 West (tel. 801/322-3556; www.settebello.net), and the Swiss fare and beer selection at the Beerhive Pub, 128 S. Main St. (tel. 801/364-4268), with a bar featuring a narrow trough of frost to keep your pint cold to the last swig.
