A rare combination of economy and location, this hotel sits east of the freeway from the rest of downtown, in an up-and-coming area near the Sunset Station entertainment complex, just a few blocks east of the River Walk and other attractions. The hotel has plenty of character: The reception and lobby area are in an 1896 brick building that once hosted a speakeasy (among other businesses), while spacious suites, in a newer building next door, feature custom-made Arts and Crafts–style furnishings. Accommodations are also equipped with sleeper sofas, microwaves, and minifridges. Despite the proximity of the freeway, rooms are surprisingly quiet.
