Bars on this hotel's front windows aren't meant to scare guests or keep them from leaving like the Hotel California; rather, they kept prisoners from escaping the building, which once was the Bexar County Jail. Don't worry, there's nothing jail-like about the interiors, which were gutted long ago. Standard budget hotel rooms are adequate in size and are comfortable overall. There are no frills or fusses here—just a sturdy, competent property with an equally no-nonsense staff. Set on the western side of downtown, away from the crowds of the River Walk, the hotel is in a safe area just a few short blocks from most attractions, including the La Villita shops and restaurants and the whole downtown scene. The hotel's name is a bit deceptive, as it does not sit directly on or overlooking the San Antonio River Walk, although that's only a few blocks away.
