One of the most stylish hotels on the River Walk was made more wow-worthy by a $10-million renovation in 2017. Rooms still look contemporary Mediterranean, with clean lines and soft lighting, but the public areas are now more in tune with the hotel’s Iberian name. Lots of dark wood, leather, and wrought-iron accents lend a Spanish Colonial heft to the decor, but the service is friendly, not formal. The excellent Buenos Aires–inspired Dorrego restaurant and adjoining Naranja bar, both opened with the renovation, are hot local gathering spots in an area of downtown that has no shortage of them; another such spot, Ácenar, though not affiliated with the hotel, is right downstairs on the River Walk. A nice bonus: complimentary coffee and freshly baked pastries served in the lobby each morning.
