This small, budget, no-frills hotel, housed in a three-story 1904 building, turned out to be a pleasant surprise in many ways. It may seem off the beaten path, but it's not. The location is within walking distance of most everything a visitor would want to see in San Antonio, including La Villita, a quiet part of the River Walk, the San Fernando Cathedral, the Bexar County Courthouse, Southtown, and the King William Historic District. The Convention Center and the Alamo are each an easy walk from here as well. Entering the unremarkable little reception area of this 39-room Ascend Collection hotel will lead to low expectations, so the rooms may come as a nice surprise. Fairly spacious and well-appointed, some quarters even offer balconies, and all have jetted tubs. Street-level rooms can be a tad noisy; however, my first-story room (101) was quiet, spacious, and more than adequate—much nicer than I expected, considering the price. A coffee bar and a light continental breakfast are available by the front door. Complimentary Wi-Fi, free daily newspapers in the lobby, and free local phone calls from the rooms will please both business and leisure travelers. Laundry service and onsite parking are nice extras, too. Bring your tunes—there are CD players in the rooms.
