Locals casually call this place "Floore's Country Store," and it's been in business since before most of us could walk, let alone dance. A Texas tradition since 1942, Floore's is the quintessential Texas dancehall/beer joint and one of the best traditional country music venues in the state. Legendary performers like Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, George Jones, and B.B. King have all played here, as have today's hottest Texas music stars like the Randy Rogers Band and Josh Abbott. "Texas Monthly" magazine said going to the John T. Floore Country Store is one of the "50 Things Every Texan Should Do," and I agree. Located in Helotes, Texas, 22 miles northwest of downtown and 9 miles from Six Flags Fiesta Texas, this is a bit of a drive, so you'll want a car and a designated driver. While you're at Floore's, don't just fill up on beer; be sure to try the homemade bread and authentic Tex-Mex tamales, highlights of the "Texas Café"-style eats. This is not a fancy place. The floors are wooden, the crowds get thick and bottleneck near the bar, and folks flow indoors and out. Willie Nelson and Family played here to a crowd of 3,000 in 2013, all standing in the pouring rain. Cold beer, hot bands, good people: Floore's Country Store never really changes, and that's why we love it.
