Founded in 1939, the city’s symphony orchestra performs from September to May, usually with two concert series, one classical and the other pops. Current music director Sebastian Lang-Lessing is a German native who has conducted orchestras around the world, including the Tokyo Philharmonic and the Orchestre de Paris. He is particularly well known for his opera direction, including work with the opera companies of San Francisco, Houston, and Los Angeles, as well as the Washington National Opera.
