Bruce Auden is a household name in San Antonio, a multiple-time James Beard “Best Chef” nominee whose restaurant on the River Walk is a fine-dining favorite. Because it’s on the ground floor of the International Center building and guests enter at St. Mary’s Street (not at River Walk) level, the modern high-ceilinged dining room has river and city-lights views from its picture windows, but it rests above the din of crowds on the bustling pathways below. Auden’s fresh menu changes daily and stays true to the season, although year-round you’re likely to find a juicy Angus rib-eye served with Shiner Bock–battered onion rings. Snapper is stuffed with Gulf crab, and Hill Country venison and quail come with 11 spices and juniper sauce. For dessert, Auden’s popular sticky toffee pudding rocks the house. For a special occasion, reserve Table 31, an intimate dining space for five to eight people, where guests can enjoy Chef Auden’s specially designed five- to eight-course tasting menus. Reservations recommended.
