Texans love their barbecue, and it makes not a whit of difference that one of the city’s hottest, most celebrated barbecue spots—it made the Eater.com list of one of the best new restaurants of 2018—is a Mexican version. The pork for the carnitas is slow-cooked for hours for both tenderness and to remove all traces of fat, while corn tortillas are made on the premises and finished on the grill. Cheese quesadillas and steak tacos are also good picks. Close to Mission Concepcion, this glorified shack with a large back yard is the perfect spot to savor some local food along with some local history. Thursday through Sunday evenings from 7 to 11pm, this place turns into a taquería—great for a pre- or post-drinks snack.
