Possibly the most romantic restaurant on the River Walk, this pricey but enchanting place is always full of well-heeled locals and proposal-popping lovers. The Fig Tree is perfect for anniversary and birthday date nights, or a special last night in San Antonio. A tiny limestone house in La Villita holds the restaurant, with terraced outdoor seating overlooking the River Walk by the Arneson River Theatre. Inside, crisp white linen tablecloths, crystal wine glasses, fine china, petite oil paintings, low lighting, and plush carpeting create an intimate atmosphere. Perhaps it's because its adjacent sister restaurant happens to be the Little Rhein Steak House, The Fig Tree's beef selections are the best things on the menu—Try the tournedos Rossini, beef Wellington, or their tender petit filet tenderloin. The rainbow trout amandine is total buttery bliss. Dining here can be expensive, but the atmosphere (and fine-tuned wine list) make it worth the cost. I once knew an attorney who said he only brought a date here if he thought he might be falling in love—ladies always swooned after an evening at The Fig Tree. Sit under the twinkling white lights that hang from the trees overlooking the River Walk and you'll understand why.
