Surfing fans will want to cruise up the coast to Oceanside, about a half-hour drive from downtown, to check out this tidy museum devoted to preserving the history and culture of wave riding in Southern California. Among the artifacts and memorabilia is a permanent exhibit tracing the evolution of the surf board, from wooden plank behemoths to today's lithe foam-and-fiberglass numbers. Another popular exhibit details the inspirational story of Bethany Hamilton, the professional surfer who lost her arm, and nearly her life, in a brutal shark attack at age 13; the display includes her shark-mangled surfboard from that fateful day. On the lighter side there's a celebrity appearance by Wilson, Tom Hanks' taciturn volleyball companion from the movie "Castaway." A small gift shop offers some cool surfing-related books, art, and apparel.
