Don't be fooled by the grand exterior of this five-story, Romanesque-style landmark designed in 1890 by the Reid Brothers, the same architects behind the iconic Hotel del Coronado—this is a splashy, ultra-chic boutique hotel from Pininfarina, the Italian design team behind Ferrari and Maserati, and it aims to seduce with modern Italian flair. Standard rooms are outfitted with Bang & Olufsen sound systems, Lavazza espresso machines, and rainfall showers, and boldly forgo any separation between the bed and bath areas. The lobby and meeting rooms are drenched in Ferrari-red. The hotel launched a new restaurant, Cafe 21, in spring of 2014, and is also planning an underground after-dinner lounge.
