Crossing beneath the slightly mod facade and entering this elaborate shrine to all things sweet can be a tad overwhelming to the average sugar fiend in search of a fix. This isn't some trendy new cupcake shop; this is a true gourmet dessert destination from the classically trained Chef Karen Krasne. Lavish cakes, cupcakes, custards, cookies, pies, and homemade ice cream are so artfully designed and displayed, one almost feels guilty for wanting to bite into them. Standouts include a dulce de leche cheesecake; an Oprah-endorsed flowery Shangri La, a vanilla cake with white chocolate, guava mousse and strawberries; and a croissant bread pudding with chocolate. There are even vegan and gluten-free options. A lunch menu offers small plates, salads, panini, cheeses, and a variety of exotic teas, as well as sparkling wines and dessert beers. The original location, smaller and without alcohol, is in Hillcrest (2929 Fifth Ave., 619/294-2132).
