If you want to stay in a beautiful, historic building and walk right out your door into the heart Fisherman’s Wharf action—and are willing to pay for the privilege—this nautical-themed hotel is perfect for you. Previously owned by upscale Kimpton Hotels (it gave up the hotel in 2015), the Argonaut is housed in the exposed red brick and wooden beams of the old 1908 cannery. Guest rooms are done up in navy and beige and decorated with tasteful nautical knickknacks (and feature free Starbucks coffee). Kids love the treasure chest at the front desk and the Wii system in the lobby, plus Ghirardelli ice cream is around the corner. Visiting dogs are equally pampered, with a dog bed, dog toys, and even doggie room service. Each afternoon at 5pm, the hotel’s Master Sommelier hand selects a few vintages for guests to enjoy at a hosted wine reception in the Living Room, a comfortable lounge area with a fireplace, plush red chairs, and all sorts of nautical paraphernalia mounted on the walls, such as maps, compasses, and wooden steering wheels. The nautical theme carries over to the Blue Mermaid Chowder House & Bar, a sea-faring room of thick-hewn timber and braided ropes. You don’t even need to leave the hotel to soak up San Francisco’s maritime past—an interactive museum kids and adults will love is located off the lobby and has made this location a historical national landmark since the [‘]70s.
