At this hotel (which until 2015 was known as Kimpton's The Palomar, but was stripped from the brand in a union dispute), you get a lot for your money in the way of service and personality. Plus you’re in a great location, inches away from Union Square (though technically South of Market), convention centers, museums, and tons of shopping. The hotel was remodeled in 2014, which gave the lobby a facelift complete with an elegant chandelier, art deco touches, and modern art. Rooms are on the large size for the area and bathrooms offer plenty of counter space. The biggest improvement is the rooftop addition of the Dirty Habit restaurant, bar, and patio, which will draws locals and visitors alike since it’s one of few rooftop spaces in the city. The previously unused middle courtyard was transformed into an urban oasis, adorned with fountains and a fire pit. And just off the elevated patio is a whiskey bar. There’s a fitness center on site, but if you can’t stand treadmills, the resident wellness expert leads a run every morning at 7am. Exercise and guided sightseeing—what’s not to love about that?
