Occupying the entire flatiron-style building at Market, McAllister and 7th streets, Proper, which opened in September 2017, is an ambitious endeavor from top to bottom. Luxury interior designer Kelly Wearstler created the hotel’s eclectic style—think Art Deco chic mixed with futuristic Art Moderne plus high-tech 21st-century amenities. The stunning rooms have such unexpected features as bold contrasting wallpaper, a decorative Vifa bluetooth speaker for streaming music, and a “curated” mini-bar stocked with cocktail and snack offerings. Proper is home to three restaurants: Villon, offering contemporary American cuisine; La Bande, a cafe with outdoor seating; and Charmaine’s, the rooftop bar with views up and down Market Street. Geared more toward the ultra-hip urbanite than the traveling family, Proper is a sight to see—you’ll want to explore this building and sample the food and drink even if you don’t stay here.
