Located at the intersection of tourist action and local hangouts, the beautifully appointed Serrano boasts amenities and luxury not usually available at a boutique urban hotel (as in, a 24-hour fitness center with dry sauna). A stunning lobby featuring intricately painted and carved ceilings, grand flower arrangements, and baroque furnishings give way to spacious, elegantly appointed rooms. Alas, the carpet and yellow wallpaper is a bit dated and, because the building is old, the rooms vary in shape and size and bathrooms are small. But most accommodations are large enough for a desk, and higher floors boast views from Union Square to Twin Peaks. The adjoined Jasper’s Corner Tap provides room service and a complimentary continental breakfast for guests. It’s also a fun place to grab a beer—they have 18 on tap—or dinner, where upscale bar bites and progressive American cuisine are served tapas-style. With extensive breakfast, brunch, lunch, pre-theater, dinner, and late-night menus, you surely won’t go hungry.
