By far the best value on Nob Hill, this elite, private social club offers the history and old-world charm of its neighboring luxury behemoths in a more intimate (and less expensive) setting. First and foremost, it’s a social club catering to San Francisco’s elite—think wood paneling, leather chairs, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and grand fireplaces—but the club opens its doors (and swanky restaurant, bar, and fitness center) to non-members. While by no means modern, rooms are elegantly appointed and homey. Suites have sitting areas large enough for a rollaway bed. The best part of this hotel, besides its stunning views from every window, is the convivial collegiate atmosphere in the Black Cat Bar, which hasn’t changed in close to a century. Another great perk is use of one of the finest gym facilities in the city, complete with exercise room, squash courts, yoga studio (with scheduled classes), steam, and sauna. Continental breakfast is included.
