Greens was, arguably, the first restaurant in the U.S. to take a gourmet approach to vegetarian food, both in its ambitious menu and its serene, all hand-carved wood decor and its oversized windows offering up one of the best water views in the city. (The restaurant is in a former warehouse at Fort Mason.) Its status remains untouched. Come here even if you’re a devoted carnivore, the food is revelatory (truly, you won’t miss the meat); and jumps continents with ease, offering terrific veggie takes on Moroccan, Mexican, and Italian foods. There’s an extensive wine list and a “Greens to Go” menu if you’d like to take a picnic on the Marina Green.
