This crowded, festive spot is popular for its delicious gourmet tacos and strong cocktails. With high ceilings, modern lighting, and warm green jewel tones on the walls, there’s nary a Mexican flag in sight; the only clue you’ve entered a Mexican restaurant—and it’s a big one—is the 120 types of tequila offered at the bar. Trying to fit into the micro-miniskirt that seems de rigueur for women customers here? Order the Marina Girl Salad, featuring avocado, cucumber, pumpkin seeds, cotija cheese, and jalapeno vinaigrette. Or follow SF Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum, who’s all about the carnitas, which he enjoys with his Giants teammates on occasion. We’re guessing they go for the tacos, which are made with a variety of fillings including summer squash, filet mignon, and the house specialty, guajillo-braised beef short ribs. This place is so popular that the owners have opened two more city locations, in North Beach (1548 Stockton St.) and in the Mission (741 Valencia St.), plus two more in the South Bay. No reservations.
