This off-the-beaten-path lodge is a good place to go if you want to see quetzals, toucanets, and not a lot of people. Located in tiny Copey de Dota, El Toucanet offers eight rustic but attractive cabins with cypress interiors and nice decks, and some have a fireplace and Jacuzzi. The towels are scratchy but the water is hot, and there are plenty of blankets, which you’ll need. The highlights of a stay here are the morning “quetzal quest” and the family-style evening meal. Try the house specialty, the baked trout.
