Without a doubt the best restaurant in Costa Rica. After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and working around France, chef José González returned home to open Al Mercat in 2014. In just a few years he has managed to redefine what Tico cuisine can be with his ingredient driven dishes sourced from his parent’s finca and regional farmer markets that explore Costa Rica’s biodiversity. The split-level restaurant is relaxed and unpretentious, serving approachable dishes like gallos (Costa Rican tacos), a hot shrimp ceviche, and sweet potato gnocchi with a Caribbean style sauce. Additionally, González hosts food tours and lunches at his family’s farm on the outskirts of San José.
