Avenida Paulista is lined with cultural centers and art galleries, many of which are funded by banks and other wealthy entities and offer a host of free programming. One of the larger and best known centers is the Centro Cultural FIESP Ruth Cardoso, housed in a striking concrete pyramid-shaped building that was designed by modernist architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha (his other works include the Pinacoteca and MUBE, the Brazilian Sculpture Museum). Open daily, the FIESP features a theater, art gallery, and mezzanine exhibit space, with free events including plays, classical music concerts, popular music festivals, movie screenings, photography exhibits, film festivals, digital art displays, and more. Check the center's website for the most up-to-date programming schedule.
