Michael's on East

Michael's on East ★★★ NEW AMERICAN—The locals’ favorite after-theater haunt, Michael’s is set in the rear of the Midtown Plaza shopping center on U.S. 41 south of downtown. Though Michael Klauber’s supper clubby bistro opened in 1987, it’s still one of the top places for fine dining. Huge cut-glass walls create three intimate dining areas, one a piano bar for pre- or after-dinner drinks. Prepared with fresh ingredients and a creative flair, house specialties include Michael’s “famous” angel hair onion rings (very addictive with house made ketchup); Galician-style braised octopus with chorizo; and pan-roasted bluefin crabcakes with dill remoulade. There are also steaks, chops, and some seriously good sides including potato croquettes and truffled mac & cheese. Best bargain: the three-course $46.95 Epicurean Adventures menu. For just $20 more you can add wine pairings. There’s live music nightly in the lounge starting at 7pm.
