Château des Milandes
Although very impressive, this château is outshone by the star-power of its former owner, the internationally renowned singer and entertainer, Josephine Baker. Born Freda Josephine McDonald in St. Louis, Missouri, Baker rented the château from 1940 and eventually bought it in 1947. Famous for many things, her active role in the French Resistance (for which she was later honored by the nation), is probably the least well-known part of her history. Able to move freely, thanks to her international reputation, she helped refugees leave the country and acted as an informant and courier. Her musical acts at the time also contained coded messages. The home is worth a visit for the history, architecture, gardens, fencing lessons, and birds of prey demonstrations. It is about 30 min. south of Sarlat-la-Canéda. Allow about 2 hours minimum for a visit.
