This three-star boutique hotel only launched in 2013 but already has a legion of repeat guests—and for good reason. The Colony is located in the heart of happening Seminyak and a short walk from Petitenget Beach, yet it's hidden back off the street, oasis-like, in a high-walled courtyard garden dotted with bougainvillea trees and orchids. The grounds are compact, with just 20 rooms tightly built around a swimming pool and stone pool deck, with an adjoining poolside café and lobby.

The Colony prides itself on highly personalized service, with friendly staff and lots of attention to detail. The two-story colonial-inspired (rare for Bali) design extends from all-white exteriors with brass lanterns, white wood shutters, potted palm plants, and rattan furniture to elegantly furnished interiors with time-warp customized wooden furnishings and whirring ceiling fans. (Thankfully, the 1930s-era feel does not extend to the bathrooms, which are sparkly and modern, although note that just one Junior Suite has a bathtub). Of the three room types, the two Superior and 10 Deluxe rooms are on the small size; the former are tucked away at each corner of the pool with small terraces. Of the six larger Junior Suites (with living areas, and in some cases daybeds), three are located on the first floor with their own private balcony, with this advantage available at no extra charge. Since the grounds are only slightly larger than the pool area, this sociable hotel offers little privacy (rooms line the pool), and understandably children under 16 are not generally permitted. In-house dining is limited, but fronting the hotel is the excellent foodies' haven Urchin Grill and Raw Bar, which is good for dinner and afternoon cocktails. Plenty of Petitenget's and Seminyak's world-class restaurants and beach clubs are easily walkable as well.
