Jeongdong Theater

Nestled on the picturesque stone wall-lined street behind Deoksugung Palace is Jeongdong Theater, a performance hall that opened in 1995 to present traditional performances on a modern stage. Since 2010, the theater's feature productions have been multiple versions of the critically acclaimed traditional musical "Miso." The most recent version, "The Story of Secretary Bae," is an interpretation of a satirical novel written during the Joseon Dynasty, using a clever combination of opera and humor to entertain audiences of locals and tourists alike. Sparkling spectacles of culture here include vibrant costumes, traditional dancing, and emotive musical performances that bring ancient Korea to life in a way Seoul's museums cannot. Although the museum facilities are a bit outdated, its small size allows for fantastic views of the stage from every seat. Unfortunately, the theater is also a hot spot for noisy, camera-toting tour groups. The show is still worth seeing, however, despite the intermittent distractions. Visitors can also try on and be photographed in colorful hanbok (traditional Korean dress) in the theater's lobby for a nominal fee, or check out the traditional musical performances occasionally held in the Ssamji Courtyard. Reservations may be made on Jeongdong Theater's website. Keep an eye out for discounts, as the theater often runs promotions for international visitors.
