A family owned restaurant that's been providing Taiwanese fare in Shanghai since 2003, Charmant religiously employs authentic old-school Taiwanese cooking methods, such as tossing both a young and old chicken together to boil for broth, to maximize both flavor and tenderness. They fly in their crustaceans from Taiwan for the Sakura shrimp fried rice, and desserts are heavenly. Try the almond jello, a sweet, white gelatin which is handmade every day from roasted almonds and coupled with diced fruits. Charmant's a favorite among local Chinese and expats alike, not to mention the Taiwanese who swear by their three-cup (sanbeiji ) chicken dish, which is a flavorful dish cooked in a rice wine, soy sauce and sesame oil marinade.
