Urban Thai was launched in 2011 by a Thai mother-daughter duo who wanted to bring cozy, familiar, and authentic Thai cuisine to Shanghai. “Mummy,” the chef, is the star of the show, serving up pad thai, homemade curries, and crab specialties in a tiny dining room which seats only about a dozen at a time. You'll often see her mingling with the guests during a break. In 2013 the restaurant started offering a 150 rmb all-you-can-eat deal, so you get the best of starters, soups, mains, and desserts — nearly two dozen options are offered — and also a delivery service so you can get great Thai in your hotel or apartment. Don’t forget to try the Thai iced tea which serves up a dollop of well-concocted, chilled caffeine.
