Getting There -- Buses from Dali Old Town to the nearest large town of Jianchuan, are approximately hourly and take about 3 1/2 hours (¥40). Buses drop visitors in a small square outside a supermarket from where it is 40 minute bus ride (¥10) into Shaxi Valley. A number of minibuses and taxis will take you into the valley for around (¥60). There are buses from Jianchuan to Lijiang (2 hr.; ¥16), but the bus station area of Jianchuan, like most towns is only worth visiting to catch the bus. Accommodation owners in Shaxi can also organize transportation in advance. Expect to pay ¥350 for a minibus from Dali.

Getting Around -- Shaxi is a small, less developed valley with few regular taxis and only occasional public visitors. For arriving and departing, arrange transportation through Mr. Wu at the Dragonfly. For visits to the various sights, hiking is by far the best option.

Tip: Arriving by the right door -- When arriving in to old town ask the driver to drop you at the East Gate (Dong Men) by the river as this is a much better entrance than from the main street.
