Maritime Museum

The big white, blue and ochre mansion on the main square is now a nautical museum, with dusty displays of dated equipment whose purpose has most-likely been forgotten. The museum houses paraphernalia related to the fishing trade, merchant marine history, and sponge-diving—the industry to which Simi owed its wealth and fame before tourism escalated. A prominent display celebrates Stathis Hatzis (1878–1936), a revered local who set a world record in 1913 by diving without equipment to a depth of 84m (276 ft.) to free a ship’s anchor.
